When We Pass
This book details the story of how one family bible, lost to the world, reconnects six generations of African-Americans. From the written word of a man, born a slave, comes one of the few family bibles to ever be displayed at the National Museum of African American History and Culture part of the Smithsonian Institution, in Washington DC. Follow Richard G. Collins as he chronicles his life and the lives of his descendants.
More from the Author
My mother, pictured here, was the family historian for the Collins clan, she wrote and amassed several crates of information on her family history, as well as documenting her own life story. She grew up in Redlands, California and in later years she created the “Redlands Raiders” newsletter which updated family members on each other yearly. We were interviewed at family reunions every year about what had transpired during that year. She kept these precious gems in books that I have to this day. Sometimes I read through them to remember how far we’ve come. My part in this journey continues in the writing of the Collins history, telling the life stories of my mother, her father and grandfather and my brother. I feel her spirit in this journey, through me her legacy lives on.
